Lawn Sprinklers

Guide to Buying Sprinklers

Effective watering is crucial to your lawn's health. This is why you have to do a little research when it comes to buying sprinklers.

First, you have to think about how much water your lawn needs. You should factor in the normal amount of rainfall you get. Your grass may need the most amount of water, while vegetable and flowerbeds need a constant amount of moisture during their growing seasons. It helps to sketch your lawn to find different "watering zones" where plants with similar needs are kept together to benefit from the same type of watering system.

If your lawn's layout is permanent, consider an underground piping system to get ample water on zones that need them, and to give less priority to zones with tall trees or shrubs that don't need to be watered as much. You can hire professionals to install these systems for you, or you can simply talk to landscape contractors, plumbing-supply store clerks or even experienced gardeners in your area.

Lawn Sprinkler Maintenance Tips

Getting high quality sprinklers can be costly - especially if you've hooked up an automatic sprinkler system. Instead of letting your dollars waste away on unchecked equipment, it's best to perform routine maintenance on your existing sprinklers. Not only will they last longer, but they can also give your lawn better, more accurate watering.

First, you have to make sure that your sprinkler heads are free from dirt and glass clippings. These may affect your sprinkler head's movement. Clean out the dirt from inside the sprinkler head as well. You can do this by removing the head and flushing it out with water from the tap or hose. Then, test your sprinklers during the day and watch out for any problems.

Planning a Lawn Sprinkler System

Lawn sprinkler systems can be efficient and cost-effective if you give a lot of thought on how they are set up. Regardless of the type of sprinkler system you want to install, there are a few things that you should keep in mind:

Before installing your pipes, figure out exactly where your grass, shrubs, trees, and other plants are going to be. Plants with the same watering needs should be placed together. Don't put your drought-tolerant plants next to plants that need a lot of water. It's also important to use the same sprinkler heads on the same valve. Spray heads and rotor heads give different amounts of water, so you should use only one kind of sprinkler head for a group of plants with similar watering needs.
